Easy Slow-Cooker Pot Roast and Gluten-Free Gravy

Finally! A crock-pot roast recipe without cream soups! Secret ingredient makes it tender and delicious! Plus, recipe for gluten-free gravy!

One of my all-time favorite crock-pot meals is pot roast! It’s a dinner classic and can feed our family for days!

Unfortunately, the way I used to make pot roast included dried soup mixes and cream soups that contain ingredients we prefer to avoid, like wheat flour, soy, and MSG.

I tried and tried making a pot roast without cream soups but it always seemed to turn out dry and flavorless.

Well, I recently discovered a “secret ingredient” that makes my roast so tender and delicious that it is making my mouth water right now just typing this!

What is the secret ingredient? Applesauce! Now, before you wrinkle your nose at the idea, the roast will not taste like applesauce at all! It merely gives it a pleasant sweet flavor.

I’m also sharing my super easy gluten-free gravy recipe! No flour or cornstarch required; you simply use cooked vegetables to thicken the gravy.

Easy Slow-Cooker Pot Roast

Ingredients

  • beef roast
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • salt
  • pepper
  • garlic powder
  • paprika

Directions

  1. Place roast in the crockpot.
  2. Sprinkle liberally with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then flip and repeat on the other side.
  3. Top roast with a layer of applesauce.
  4. Pour about 1 cup of water around the roast (not on top).
  5. Cook on low for about 8 hours.
  6. About an hour before it's done, remove the roast from the crockpot and shred it.
  7. Return the shredded beef to the crockpot and sprinkle in more salt and some paprika. Mix well.

Gluten-Free Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

  • drippings from a slow-cooked pot roast
  • cooked carrots, onions, celery, and/or potatoes

Directions

  1. Pour off some of the liquid from the roast.
  2. Add the liquid and some cooked vegetables to a blender and blend well.
  3. Add more liquid or vegetables to reach your desired consistency.

Notes

*Cook your vegetables in the crockpot with the roast to save time.

    • The mashed sweet potatoes are also super yummy! Not much of a recipe for those though: peel, chop, boil, drain, and mash with ghee (or butter) and sea salt. YUM.

  5. I will be making dinner for my brother and his family in two days. One of my nieces has celiac so I’m looking for a good roast recipe. This one seems to fit the bill! However, I do have a question. My brother and his wife are on a low carb diet so I’m wondering if “no sugar added” apple sauce will work as well as regular? Also, how can I thicken the gravy without using potatoes or carrots?
